Colorado Springs Local Information

History

With abundant sunshine, blue skies, and a very temperate climate, the Pike's Peak region is a great place to live and work.  With humble beginnings along the banks of Fountain and Monument Creeks, Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City were initially settled in the mid 19th century.  After the Civil War, local historic icon General William Palmer was instrumental in putting the area on the map by linking it to Denver via his own Denver-Rio Grande Railroad.  Jackson helped plan the original area as a resort community, much of downtown still bears his influence.   He was instrumental in planting thousands of trees in the area, a mix of pines and spruces gathered from the mountains, and cottonwoods, and elms, some of which still exist today.  Others have left their mark, such as Spencer Penrose, father of the Broadmoor Resort.  Around the time of World War II, the area also began to manifest the strong military presence still existing today, with the local area home to the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, and Schriever Air Force Base, as well as NORAD.  Also home to the well respected Colorado College, Colorado Springs boasts a variety of local colleges and schools, and many many parks, legacy to General Palmer's first efforts.  Want to learn more?  Check out the links below, especially the Pikes Peak Library page.
